Brief History of MBI

Myanmar Bible Institute (M.B.I.) is the first Bible College of the Christian Churches (Churches of Christ) to be found in Burma (Myanmar).

In 1984, Pioneer Christian Missionary, Mr. Dakumpi Graham, together with the Maymyo Church of Christ Christian leaders, were able to buy a land in the strategic city of Maymyo (Pyin-Oo-Lwin), about 41 miles east of Mandalay City in central Burma. Then Brother Dakumpi Graham and his team of Christian teachers began giving Bible training for Christian students who came from many different ethnic backgrounds.

Teaching at M.B.I. began mainly in the Burmese language, because this is the national language for all the “people-groups” of Burma.

In 1984, the land for M.B.I. included two old buildings, partly made of woven bamboo mats, and on high stilts above the ground to keep the houses dry during the floods of the annual monsoon season.

From 1984, M.B.I. began the great work that Jesus commanded His Disciples, in Acts 1:8, “Ye shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the world.”

From that beginning in 1984, Myanmar Bible Institute continued to grow. Christian students came from the Rawang, Lisu, Ngochang, Chin, Jingphaw, Lauvo, Lachid, Kayan, Naga, Shanand Mro tribes of Burma. On weekends, the Christian students went to nearby villages to put into practice what they had learned in the classes at M.B.I. Also, the Professors of M.B.I. carefully discipled their students. After completing four years of Bible College at M.B.I., the Christian students received their B. Th. Degrees.

From M.B.I., many of the Graduates became Christian missionaries to the Burmese, Chin, Rawang, Lisu, Naga, Khamti Shan, Ngochang, and Kachin (Jinghpaw), and Mro Tribes all over Burma.

Through M.B.I., a great program of establishing new “Gospel Beach-Heads” began. Thousands of people turned from Buddhism, Hinduism, and evil-spirit worship (animism) to Christ. The Graduates of Myanmar Bible Institute planted many new churches all over Burma.

Myanmar Bible Institute developed a very strong staff of dedicated, highly trained, highly motivated Christian Professors for spreading the Gospel all over Burma.

Statement of Belief

  • We believe in one God—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • We believe that the Old and New Testament Scriptures, inspired by God, contain all truth necessary to faith and Christian living.
  • We believe that the atonement through Jesus Christ is for the whole human race; that whosoever repents and believes on the Lord Jesus Christ is justified and regenerated and saved from the dominion of sin.
  • We believe that believers are to be justified wholly, subsequent to regeneration, through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • We believe that the Holy Spirit bears witness to the new birth.
  • We believe that the Lord will return, the dead will be raised, and the final judgment will take place.
